West Shoreway Update

After a long delay in the planning of this project, various issues (mainly the impact of traffic lights) have been resolved so the project can go forward There are no plans to install traffic lights. Phase 1 and Phase 2 group the timeline of the changes. A proposed schedule has Been released for Phase 1 changes
Mid 2010-completion of environmental document so work can proceed
(1A) Fall 2010/Spring 2011-W 76th (under railroad tracks and Shoreway) and Clifton/Lake (under the Shoreway) pedestrian tunnels-upgrading and modernizing of existing tunnels
(1B) Timing dependent on state legislative action to change speed limit to 35 MPH. This affects the following actions: A multipurpose trail from W 65th to W 28th, Reworking of the W49th/Hermann Ave ramps to one lane each way with a 2 way multipurpose trail as well as improving the exit from and entrance to the Shoreway, Work on the West Blvd/Lake Ave/Clifton Blvd area-includes closing ot the westbound Edgewater Dr ramp to increase parkland and calm traffic and increase pedestrian safety at West Blvd/Lake Ave
(1C) 2013 Start-extend W 73rd under the railroad tracks and link it to existing entrance/exit to Edgewater Park, a significant amount of work will be needed to relocate a regional sanitary interceptor sewer
(1D) 2013 Start-Detroit Rd and W 25th/W28th area: Close eastbound entrance to Shoreway at W 28th and relocate entrance to W 45th. Close westbound entrance at W 25th and relocate to reconfigured W 28th Close eastbound exit to W 25th . Simphify the exiting W 45th exit/entrance , Extend multipurpose trail from W 28th to W 25th
Phase 2-Schedule to be determined-Mainline reconstruction of Shoreway which includes a landscaped median, removal of shoulders, and retention of six total lanes
The total amount of money available at the moment is $49.8 million. More money will almost certainly be needed to complete Phase 2 Phase 1 should have enough funding.
Only a small portion of the work in Phase 1 is occurring north of the Shoreway. Most of the work involves connecting the Neighborhoods adjacent to the West Shoreway
